Chimney Fire Coffee - 2023 impact report review

This week’s impact report is from my friends at fellow Surrey B Corp™ Chimney Fire Coffee.

👍🏻 3 things I like...

1. THE QUESTIONS THEY ASK

They say they ask these two questions at the beginning of every development process:

  • Is this necessary for an everyday product?

  • How is this an improvement of what we already do?

2. THEY GET SPECIFIC

They talk about details and specific things they’ve done. They show that they’re digging into different aspects of their business and supply chain to see where they can make a difference.

For example, they talk about (and share numbers for) changes they’ve made to reduce CO2 emissions.

And share lots of detail about what they’ve done to reduce packaging impact … plus the things they still plan to work on.

3. CUSTOMER SURVEY RESPONSE

They talk about their customer survey and get into specific detail about what feedback they received and how they’ve responded to it.

❓3 questions it raises

1. WHY ARE THEIR IMPACT OBJECTIVES IMPORTANT?

I know a bit about the coffee industry but I’m not an expert. So I was keen to understand why their impact objectives matter.

They aim to buy the majority of their coffee directly from a grower or producer. Why is this important?

They aim to pay at least double the Fairtrade price? Why?

What are the problems with the traditional approach to coffee that they’re trying to address through the way they run their business?

2. HOW ARE THEY MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE RISK?

Coffee growers are already being impacted by climate change and the impacts are only expected to get worse.

How are they future-proofing their business for when coffee can’t be grown where it is now?

3. HOW DO THEY CHOOSE WHICH CHARITIES TO SUPPORT?

What criteria do they use for selecting social impact partners and charity beneficiaries?

What due diligence do they carry out to make sure funding actually makes a difference?
