B Lab UK - 10 year impact report
To celebrate 10 years of the B Corp movement in the UK, B Lab UK released Take 10, a report of their impact in the last 10 years.
👍🏻 Three things I like:
1. QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF IMPACT
B Lab have loads of data, enabled by their B Impact Assessment tool and their strong community of certified B Corps. This enables them to measure impact quantitatively in a way many businesses struggle to do.
They share their methodology in an appendix, including definitions and the limitations of their approach.
2. QUALITATIVE EXAMPLES BRING IMPACT TO LIFE
The report is full of case studies. They bring in external voices and perspectives, which is often a more effective way of demonstrating impact than describing it in your own words.
3. RALLYING CRY
There is a clear rallying cry at the end of the report. There are five clear actions people can take, and it’s clear how everyone can play a role in scaling B Lab UK’s impact in the future.
❓Three questions it raises:
1. WHAT DO THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE THROUGH THE REPORT?
One of the first questions we ask our clients when we start working on their impact report is – why are you writing this report?
I was curious to understand what B Lab UK want to achieve through this report, especially given it’s the first they’ve chosen to publish.
2. HOW WILL THEY MEASURE FUTURE PROGRESS?
They talk about “The next chapter”. How will they measure progress? I would have loved to see some SMARTer objectives and milestones.
3. IS IT BALANCED?
The report is possibly a bit too glowing. I’d have loved to see a more balanced report.
What’s gone wrong?
What have been their biggest challenges?
What negative impacts have they had?
What mistakes have they made?
What unintended consequences?
What are their limitations as an organisation?
